According to Wikipedia, adult coloring books became very popular from 2010 forward. They are known to be therapeutic, and some even state that coloring is a form of meditation.
For the majority of people, coloring is an easy way to relax for a short time, but there have been mixed results. Some people find it increases stress when they are put on front of a picture with a hand full of colored pencils.
Personally, I find it quite relaxing to sit and color for an hour or so, but not to the point of meditation. My primary goal in these projects is to create something beautiful and take some time for myself.
I like abstract pictures, mandalas, sea life, words, and mystical pages personally, and have many different books and loose pages lying around my house. Once I have completed a page, I often will cut it out or pin it up so it is not a colored picture hiding in a book, but rather a colorful addition to my artwork collection. I have also done a set of the same picture, colored in different ways or styles, and hung them side by side so I could compare and enjoy the differences between the two.
Colored pencils, crayons, felt tipped markers, watercolors, pastels… there are many tools- many mediums a person could use to create or color a picture. for the books I have, I find that simple colored pencils work the best, as crayons don’t stay as nicely inside the lines, and felt pens tend to bleed through the pages if not used carefully.
I have seen many great pictures done by a few of my friends in their own coloring books. I love the detail and creativity that is put into these works of art. Because it is both a cause of enjoyment and a mode of relaxation, I find this a perfect way to relax after a busy day.
